DESCRIPTION:I’m personally inviting you to come celebrate the Closing Reception for my ninth solo exhibition\, “Gente de Maíz\,” on Saturday\, November 1st\, from 1-3 p.m. at HD South Gallery 4 in Gilbert\, AZ. \n  \nThis exhibition honors departed family members\, loved ones\, and everyday people who embody the ancestral understanding that humans are like maíz. I’m especially excited for you to see it\, as it’s my first show where I’ve experimented with creating all the portraits using watercolor\, charcoal and graphite. \n  \nTo celebrate our community\, we’ll also have music\, empanadas and warm beverages. The portraits commemorate both departed family members and loved ones who remain\, capturing their distinct identities and illustrating how they are intrinsically linked to the spirit of Maíz. Each piece features a grid in the background symbolizing societal constraints\, while the subjects depicted represent the act of transcending these limitations to realize their fullest potential. Watercolor and graphite were chosen as primary media to highlight the nuanced beauty and complexity achieved through transparent layering\, contributing depth and vitality to each portrait within the collection.

DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: SPLIT: THREADS OF FRACTURE AND CONNECTION – SUSAN ALLRED\nEach of us experience moments of fracture\, division\, and separation. These “splits\,” whether they’re physical\, emotional or societal\, profoundly shape our perspective. In this fiber arts exhibition\, Susan Allred uses the traditional crafting of quilting to create sculptural forms that explore the nature of splits and the ways they can challenge and transform us. \nIn the past\, quilting was a social activity\, gathering the women in a household—or often a neighborhood—together to do handwork while they chatted and rested from other family duties. Allred believes that her modern version of this craft celebrates this historical power of social connection and the resilience of the human spirit. With quiet contemplation of our moments of division\, we can learn to navigate these experiences with greater empathy and wisdom.

DESCRIPTION:Photography Exhibit Opening Reception – Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.\nDuring the month of January\, we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. with an exhibition presenting a selection of photographs by Dan Budnik and Susan Berger. \nPhotographs by photojournalist Dan Budnik take us to the time of the Selma-Montgomery March\, March on Washington DC\, and the Voting Rights Act.  Dan Budnik documented social\, political\, and cultural change in the world for 55 years.  He was at the heart of the civil rights movement. \nPhotographs by Susan Berger in this exhibit resulted from her travels across the United States in honor of Dr. King.  These photographs have been selected from her book “Life and Soul—American Streets Honoring Martin Luther King.”

Museum admission is required to see the display\, and we do ask an additional $1 donation to cover the cost of archival gloves which must be worn by all those who wish to flip through the pages of time. So\, whether you have family members whose pictures are in the yearbooks\, or you are just intrigued by the styles\, trends\, and happening during the 50’s and 60’s\, you won’t want to miss your chance to peruse these annuals.
