DESCRIPTION:Navajo\, Laguna Acoma\, and other Native American railroad workers have been a vital elements of track construction and maintenance since 1880. The story of the Native people’ association with the “Iron Steed” is a fascinating\, although little know one. You will not want to miss this informative program facilitated by historian Fred Friedman. Fred served as head of the New Mexico state railroad bureau as well as a railroad accident investigator and has spent many years researching the history of the railroad in the Southwest. \nThis program is not an in-person workshop and will be offered virtually.  \nRegistration is required and all registrants will receive a Zoom link via email. DESCRIPTION:The monsoon may be the most talked-about weather feature of Phoenix in recent months\, but another weather-related phenomenon going on in the Valley happens 12 months of the year. It’s the urban heat island\, a phenomenon that makes the Phoenix nighttime low temperatures 1- to 15 degrees warmer than temperatures in rural areas. DESCRIPTION:Duane Roen has been tracing his roots since his teenage years\, building a database with more than 32\,000 ancestors. Duane is the founding coordinator of the Project of Writing and Recording Family History in the College of Interactive Sciences and Arts at ASU.  In this workshop he will discuss how to leave a legacy for generations through writing journals. Participants will write a journal entry (please bring paper and pen or a laptop) and will be invited to share their writing with the group.
