DESCRIPTION:On February 12\, 1924\, Eunice Inez “June” Neely was born.  She and her family moved to Gilbert that same year\, and she has lived in Gilbert ever since.  In 1944 she married Marvin Morrison.  On Tuesday\, February 13th we will help June Morrison celebrate her 100th birthday with free museum admission\, birthday cake\, and a visit by Mrs. Morrison herself!  Join us as we honor this treasured Gilbert resident.  Also\, on display from February 6th-February 20th\, a special exhibit honoring Mrs. Morrison\, her life\, and her impact on Gilbert. \nJune will be at the museum at 10am and 2pm \n  \nA big thank you to Whisk and Paddle for making June’s birthday cake!

SUMMARY:Arizona's WWII Airfields
DESCRIPTION:Phoenix native Steve Hoza has worked in the museum field for the past 35 years. He is a recognized authority on the history of World War II in Arizona and has written extensively on the subject. He is an archivist and paper/book conservator at the Salt River Indian Community. Arizona was the home to 59 military airfields during World War II\, training tens of thousands of pilots\, bombardiers\, and gunners. Steve Hoza has visited each of these fields and presents information on the fields and how they were used. Artifacts from the trainings will also be shown. \nRegistration is required. \nCost: FREE.

DESCRIPTION:Spend a Saturday morning at the museum conducting fun and exciting science experiments. Local teacher\, Erik Gillman\, will lead participants through a workshop that will allow kids to carve their own wood art using computer numerical control. Whatever design you can draw (or import from the Internet)\, you can carve into wood. The basic components of the workshop will include: \n\nCreating a design on a Chromebook using EASEL software.\nConverting the design into GCODE which the router understands.\nSetting up the CNC router and starting the carving process.\n\nAll supplies will be provided. Ages 12 & up. \nRegistration is required. Space is limited. \nCost: FREE. Every attendee will need an email address to set up a free account on EASEL.

DESCRIPTION:Research indicates that getting angry or upset can suppress our immune systems\, but finding humor in stressful situations and laughing at them can boost our immune systems\, reduce stress\, and even regulate blood pressure (Northwestern Medicine). Fortunately\, life offers us humor in many forms and at many moments. In this workshop\, we will share some of the humor that each of us has experienced. We will discuss some of that humor; then we will write about it and share what we have written. This program/workshop is facilitated by retired professor Duane Roen\, founding coordinator for the Project for Writing and Recording Family History in the College of Integrative Science and Arts at A.S.U. Join us as we learn about the power of laughter in our everyday lives. \nRegistration is required.

DESCRIPTION:Photography Exhibit Opening Reception – Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.\nDuring the month of January\, we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. with an exhibition presenting a selection of photographs by Dan Budnik and Susan Berger. \nPhotographs by photojournalist Dan Budnik take us to the time of the Selma-Montgomery March\, March on Washington DC\, and the Voting Rights Act.  Dan Budnik documented social\, political\, and cultural change in the world for 55 years.  He was at the heart of the civil rights movement. \nPhotographs by Susan Berger in this exhibit resulted from her travels across the United States in honor of Dr. King.  These photographs have been selected from her book “Life and Soul—American Streets Honoring Martin Luther King.”

SUMMARY:Book Reading and Workshop- Two True Karate Kids
DESCRIPTION:Join local children’s picture book author-illustrator\, Jenifer Tull-Gauger\, for a book reading and workshop. The author will read The Two True Karate Kids: A Dojo Kun Character Book on Battling Dishonesty\, from her children’s character-building picture book series. Following the book reading\, the author will lead a workshop on honesty. Body language basics for trying to determine the truth will be covered\, as well as a discussion on being honest with oneself as well as others. Participants can use this information to create their own bliss lists. The books are geared toward children ages 5 to 10\, but all ages are welcome to join this free special event. Non-reading/writing children will need an older partner to help them with creating their bliss list. Registration is required.
