The monsoon may be the most talked-about weather feature of Phoenix in recent months, but another weather-related phenomenon going on in the Valley happens 12 months of the year. It’s the urban heat island, a phenomenon that makes the Phoenix nighttime low temperatures 1- to 15 degrees warmer than temperatures in rural areas. Arizona State graduate student and researcher at the ASU SHADE Lab, Florian Schneider, will guide participants through understanding the urban heat island effect and what Arizona is doing to combat it.
